Initial Walkthrough – Performing an initial walk through of your location during day light is not always necessary, but may be a good idea especially if the investigation is in an abandoned building. Take a digital camera with you and take some pictures of what you would like the stationary video cameras to view, possible safety hazards, and an overall view of the area with full lighting. Pass this information onto your team or have your team attend the initial walkthrough.

This is mainly for safety reasons. If you are entering a location that may have faulty floors or obstacles to walk around then of course these are easily more identifiable in the light. If you plan on using multiple static cameras throughout your investigation then you might want to decide in the light where your tripods or cameras will sit.

If you have equipment power considerations than an initial walkthrough may be necessary for any location. You want to be able to identify, prior to showing up, where you are going to get power for your equipment. It could be very disappointing to arrive at a location and discover that power isn’t available.
